Upcycling is the art of repurposing your clothes to give them a new look. It is an innovative, pocket-friendly, and sustainable way to give new life to your existing clothes instead of spending more money on new outfits. For example, you can convert your old saree into an Anarkali dress, or a heavy dupatta into a top or blouse. A skilled fashion designer can help you convert any piece of clothing that you don’t want to wear anymore into a new and stylish outfit!

Our client Suma approached Lavender, The Boutique to upcycle two of her sarees to create new outfits for her friend’s wedding. The first saree was extra special because it was a gift from Suma’s friend, who had sadly passed away.

Suma wanted to convert this saree into a dress so that she could wear it more often and keep her friend’s memories close to her. It was a blue georgette saree that we decided to convert into an Anarkali dress.

We created an Angrakha-style Anarkali dress with the saree fabric. We gave the dress 3/4th sleeves and added the saree’s border at the flare of the Anarkali. To make the dress more eye-catching, we added some lace at the neckline. We also made a pink Benarasi dupatta to create a striking contrast with the blue dress.

Suma wanted her second outfit to be a Sharara dress. She had already purchased a readymade Sharara, which she did not end up liking. So, she wanted to get another Sharara stitched without spending more money on the fabric. This gave her the idea to upcycle her favourite saree into a Sharara dress.

For this outfit, Suma gave us a peach crepe saree with silver embroidery. We made the Sharara pants and kurta using this fabric. We added 3/4th sleeves and a sweetheart neckline to the Kurta for a comfortable and stylish look. Our designers also made a contrasting red chiffon dupatta with lace embellishments to add more wow factor to the look.

The Final Look

Suma looked elegant and beautiful in both outfits. They were comfortable and stylish, and the best part was that she could reuse her favourite sarees to make the dresses. We loved giving a new life to Suma’s cherished sarees so that she could wear them more often!
