Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala, celebrated over ten days in the state and other parts of South India. It is a celebration filled with vibrant colours, decadent food, and festive fashion. Most people opt for custom-made outfits for the festival to look their stylish best. Our client Dhanya was also looking for a custom-made Onam outfit for her daughter Sasha in vivid festive hues. The interesting part was that Dhanya wanted us to create this outfit from her old saree!
At Lavender, The Boutique, we specialize in upcycling old clothing into new outfits. Therefore, we were completely onboard Dhanya’s idea to create a half-saree style lehenga for her daughter Sasha using a Mysore Silk crepe saree. Moreover, the bright pink and yellow colours of the saree were perfect for Onam.
Using Dhanya’s saree, we created a crop top style blouse and lehenga skirt for Sasha. For the skirt, we chose a Kali Wala lehenga, where the Kalis were later pleated for a stylish look. We also used the pink saree border as the border for the lehenga to create a regal look.
We decided to give an Indo-Western look to Sasha’s crop top with doubled-layered butterfly sleeves. The blouse was backless with a criss-cross Dori at the back and a simple round neckline at the front to draw more attention to the designer sleeves. The bodice of the blouse was made using the pink saree border.

Sasha looked extremely stylish in her Pattu lehenga made from her mother’s saree. The fluttery sleeves were the star of the outfit and added a fashionable twist to the traditional lehenga design. Moreover, the vibrant pink saree border was the perfect choice for the blouse and crop top as the bright hue elevated the design.
