Sangeeta wanted cute traditional outfits for her kids for the occasion of Vara Mahalakshmi Puja. Here's what we designed for the little ones.

Vara Mahalakshmi Puja is a popular South Indian festival where married women pray to Goddess Lakshmi for their family’s well being. The whole family wears new outfits in vibrant colours to honour the auspicious occasion. For this year’s Vara Mahalakshmi Puja, our client Sangeeta wanted designer brother-sister traditional dresses for her son and daughter. Here is how our team created colourful and festive dresses for the two kids.

Sangeeta wanted her son to wear a dhoti kurta during the festival. Dhoti kurta for boys is a comfortable traditional outfit, but little boys may have trouble tying the dhoti. So, we made a pre-pleated dhoti for Sangeeta’s son, with an elastic and a zipper to make it easy to wear. The accompanying kurta had copper Zari, so we dyed the foil fabric of the dhoti in a matching copper colour.

For the kurta, we used a brocade fabric with a green base colour and copper Zari work. We recommended an Angrakha style for the kurta as it is in trend these days and would look stylish with the dhoti. We added full sleeves to the Kurta and also added a cotton lining under the fabric to make the outfit soft and comfortable.

For her daughter’s dress, Sangeeta did not want yet another Pattu-Pavada style dress as her daughter already had many lehengas. So, Sangeeta wanted something different yet with a South Indian traditional feel. Hence, we decided to create an Indian-style gown with a pure silk Ikat fabric.

Ikat is a traditional fabric that uses the technique of resist dyeing. Each yarn is partially covered with a resist and then dyed so that some parts of the yarn retain their original colour. This yarn is then used to weave the Ikat fabric, where patterns emerge as a result of the resist dyeing technique.

For Sangeeta’s daughter’s dress, we chose an Ikat fabric with shades of pink and blue for a traditional feel. The dress also had a Pattu border for an even more festive look. This fabric gave the South Indian touch to the gown without being heavy or uncomfortable. For the neckline, we chose a simple round neck and elevated the cuteness quotient of the gown with puff sleeves.

The Final Look
_____

The brother-sister duo looked extremely adorable and festive in the outfits we designed for them. We were glad to see that the children were comfortable in their dresses and were able to move around freely. Plus, our careful selection of each design element imparted a traditional feel to their look.
