The Half Saree Ceremony is a coming-of-age ritual celebrated in the Southern states of India with much pomp and show. It is a landmark event in a girl’s life when she hits puberty and wears a half saree for the first time, equivalent to the Dhoti ceremony for adolescent boys.
Teenaged girls in the Southern states of the country adorn the half saree till their marriage and start wearing a full saree after their wedding. A half saree comprises a flared skirt, a blouse, and a dupatta draped as a pallu, and marks a milestone in womanhood. Hence, the first time an adolescent girl wears a half saree, the event is celebrated as an elaborate function. Relatives and friends gather to shower blessings and gifts upon the girl at the ceremony.
Our client Madhuri visited Lavender, The Boutique, looking for a magnificent dress for her daughter’s half saree function in Andhra Pradesh. In the state of Andhra Pradesh, this half saree is called a Langa Voni. And since this would be her daughter’s first Langa Voni for the grand ceremony, Madhuri wanted it to look vibrant.
Given the resplendent occasion, we selected a bright pink and gold theme for the custom-made half saree. For the skirt, we used a magnificent Kanjivaram saree that we added a beautiful flare to with knife pleats.
To match the skirt, we designed a blouse using a pink raw silk fabric with Zardozi embroidery all over it. Since Madhuri wanted a long blouse for her daughter, we added the saree border to the edge of the blouse for more length and also used it to adorn the elbow sleeves. We kept the blouse neckline simple and comfortable with a boat neck.
To complete the look, we made a pink chiffon dupatta that would be lightweight and comfortable for the ceremony. Also, we added a double scalloped border to the Dupatta to give it a stylish and vibrant look.

Madhuri’s daughter looked like a princess at her half saree ceremony in the outfit we designed for her. She paired it beautifully with sparkling jewellery that further elevated the look, making it ideal for the festive occasion.
