How to get Your Padded Blouse Design Right

Padded Blouse design, if done well, looks beautiful on Every Body Type. Here are some Tips to get a Modern, Celebrity Style Blouse you've always dreamt of..
Padded Saree Blouses worn by Bollywood actresses

You have probably experienced this before.

You purchased an amazing Designer Saree & are now looking for a classy blouse to go with it. You scanned dozens of designs on websites, pinterest etc – in a pursuit to find something that is modern and sexy enough to flaunt your waist, arms and back, and yet modest enough to pass through the radar of your conservative grandma and aunts!

You finally converge on a padded blouse design & hand it over to a Tailor who promises to deliver the exact replica of the design. The end result however is so disappointing that you want to cry. Tailor stitched padded blouses are typically ill-fitted, look shoddy (the pad seems to have been attached separately) & the busts feels loose.

Sometimes the experiences are so bad, that many women shy away from getting any padded design for themselves in future. In a few cases, they even think that padded blouses probably do not suit their body type

The fact however is that padded blouses, if done well, look beautiful on every body type & every skin tone. They fit well, give a nice shape and are comfortable. You don’t have to worry about your bra strap showing or falling as the bra is not required in such blouses.

In this 2nd article of our Blouse Blog Series, Let us see how to get your padded blouse right

Some FAQ’s regarding padded blouses

For the uninitiated, a padded blouse is a blouse with “built-in” bra cups & is supposed to be worn without a bra. It saves you from the embarrassment of having your bra strap peeking from your sexy blouse & allows you to safely flaunt your style

Padded blouses are a must for blouses with heavy embroidery. This is because heavily embroidered blouses become stiff and tight due to the work and wearing a bra along with that would be too uncomfortable. Not just heavily embroidered blouses, but ideally all kinds of designer blouses and backless blouses can only be created using pads. A bra, even if made from a transparent material, would spoil the look of the blouse or make it too uncomfortable to wear. Also, padded blouses allow a lot of design freedom to create modern style blouses – with different cuts and patterns, which is not feasible with traditional blouses

If you are opting for a backless or off-shoulder blouse, then a padded blouse eliminates the hassle of finding the perfect bra that does not show through the design. Also, if you have ever tried strapless bras, you would know that most of them do not provide ample support or start slipping down as the hours pass by, which is certainly not the experience you are looking for when you are all dolled up

On the other hand, you can simply slip into the padded blouse, and no matter what the shoulder or back style is, the pads will stay in place, providing support all day, without any straps digging into your skin or being embarrassingly visible

Here are some blouse styles that are best suited for padded blouses as it may be hard to find appropriate bras for the same

When tailored right, padded blouses are extremely comfortable and will provide ample support to your bust. The pain and discomfort caused by bra straps can be completely eliminated by opting for a padded blouse. However, a padded blouse can be extremely uncomfortable if it is not stitched well i.e. if the cups are not placed correctly as per the body shape or if the inner lining is not of good quality.

A lot of women come that come into our boutique have a preconceived notion that padded blouses are uncomfortable. This is usually because they have only tried readymade padded blouses at a retail store in the past, which are not their perfect size & are made with low quality pads. However, once they try on our custom-made padded blouses with international quality cups and a double lining for a seamless finish, they are converted into padded blouse lovers!

Remember that a tailored blouse that is designed for your bust size will be much more comfortable than the readymade padded blouses that have a generic fit

Padded blouses are suitable for all body types and can be worn by both heavy and small-busted people. All you need to do is opt for the right cup size and thickness of the pads so as to customize it for your body type, which is what an experienced designer can help you with. If you are small busted (size 30 or less), it is advisable to go for double padding. This will give a good shape to the blouse, which may look too loose or unshapely in the bust area otherwise.

On the other hand, large busted women (size 46 & above) often find padded blouses, no matter how well stitched, a tad too loose and feel the need for added support for their bust. This is because the pads alone can only provide limited support, which may not be sufficient for those with a larger bust size. In such cases, we typically attach bra loops on the back portion of the blouse which are stitched on the inner side of the blouse fabric. This ensures that the pads hold the breasts firmly like a bra and provide adequate support as they are tied securely with the loops at the back

While a number of local tailors carry only a single size in blouse pads, ideally the size of your blouse pads should match your usual bra cup size

This is why a lot of you may have found padded blouses stitched by a tailor unsightly and uncomfortable. A designer that specializes in blouse designs will see to it that your padded blouse is fitted with cups of the right size

A common misconception regarding padded blouses is that they get distorted easily during storage. This is only true for poor-quality readymade padded blouses or poorly tailored padded blouses. The high quality pads used by our boutique have a firmness to them which ensures that the blouse will retain its shape for years. Since the pads used by us are not flimsy at all, you can simply fold the blouse and store it like a regular blouse without any fear of it losing its shape

The cups of a padded blouse are made out of the same material as the cups in padded bras. Just like the quality of bra cups varies from brand to brand, the quality of the cup material for padded blouses can also vary depending on what your tailor uses. At Lavender, The Boutique, we use only high-quality bra cups for all our padded blouses, which are similar to ones used by premium lingerie brands such as Jockey and Enamor

Padded blouses are more expensive than non-padded blouses because of the additional cup material that needs to be added and the tailoring effort required for the same. If designed right, they are definitely worth the investment though because the final look of padded blouses is much more seamless than that of non-padded ones and you don’t even have to purchase a bra separately

How To Get The Perfect Padded Blouse Stitched

#1 - Find the right Boutique

Ask women across India to recommend a tailor who can stitch that perfect padded saree blouse and you are most likely to hear them say they are still looking for one!

Let’s get this straight.

Unless you are one of the few lucky ones, there is no-way just a tailor alone can create a padded designer blouse that looks good & fits you perfectly. You need an expert – a Designer to supervise the Tailor.

No, I’m not saying this because I run a Designer Boutique myself – I say this because I’m aware of the technicalities involved in creating a Modern Perfectly Fitting Padded Blouse. There is the thinking of a Designer coupled with the craftsmanship of an experienced tailor that goes behind creating a masterpiece

A seasoned designer can not only guide the tailor regarding the fitting of the padded blouse, but will also customize the design and embellishments of your blouse to make it unique so as to reflect your personality

#2 - Get Comfortable with the style

Not everybody is comfortable with Padded Blouses, if you havent been used to it.

So the first step is to get comfortable with it – try out some designs at a nearby shop/ boutique to assess your comfort levels. Don’t go for it, if you do not feel comfortable wearing it

Once you’ve decided to go for it, make sure that you also try some sample designs made by the boutique where you are planning to get it stitched. Not every boutique may have the right understanding to create a padded blouse & you should not end up having a ‘tailor like’ experience as before

When you are getting measured for the blouse at the boutique of your choice, wear a bra that fits you well to ensure that your measurements are perfect. Avoid getting measured during your period because you may be bloated, which can mess up the fitting of your blouse. Here are some more tips on how to ensure the perfect fit for your blouse

#3 - Check the Quality of Construction

The fitting of the blouse is the most important. If it is loose and baggy, it cannot (and must not!) be worn. Make sure you know your bra size well so that the cups can be fitted accordingly. A lot of tailors use the same size of cups for all blouses, but a good boutique will ask you for the right cup size.

When you wear the blouse and raise your hands, the cup should not rise or fall and the sleeves should be loose enough to move your arms – this is the best way to check the fitting

It is important that the Boutique uses the right quality of pads – so that it holds the bust properly & does not crumble after a wash.

Good padded blouses must be always be done with done with a “double lining” from inside – on both sides of the pad, so that it is seamless with the blouse and is held at the right place.

Thin Microdot Fusing must be necessarily used – it helps the bust maintain its crisp shape and lines after pressing

Pro*Tips

3 Padded Blouse Mistakes to Avoid

Poor Cup Quality

Do not shy away from spending a little bit extra on premium quality cups. High-quality cups will ensure that your blouse will retain its shape after several washes and will last you much longer

Inadequate Cup Thickness

If the padding used in the blouse is too thin then it will look flimsy and won’t support your breasts properly whereas if it is too thick then it will look stiff and unnatural. A good boutique will always use cups with adequate thickness to give your bust area ample support and a natural fit

Incorrect Positioning of Cups

The cups of the padded blouse should cover your breasts just like the cups of a bra. If they are placed too high or too close to each other, they won’t support your breasts properly and the blouse fitting will look very odd

And then there are many other small things that goes behind a well designed, perfectly fitting blouse. At Lavender, The Boutique we pay close attention to all these aspects of the comfort and quality of your padded blouse and more, to make sure that your blouse turns out to be absolutely perfect! Wish you all the very best with your next Padded Blouse – hope you get a good one this time!

      1. My tailor has put cups in the padded blouse and it’s very odd looking. Makes the breasts look very high and very large. Also the cup doesn’t cover the full breast so it looks like a bullet bra. Is this normal? The hands cannot be lifted at all.

        1. Lavender, The Boutique

May be pad is not correct size. May be bust point is wrong.
Some time if pad quality is not good then it’s looks very odd.
Either armhole is tight or front crass cut is deep that’s why you can’t lift your arm

This is certainly not normal. The blouse has to fit your size & not the other way around 🙂
